What's the Difference Between Carrier and Essential Oils?
A carrier oil is a fatty oil pressed from a seed, nut or kernel — almond, grape seed and castor among them — that can be used directly on skin or hair at full strength. An essential oil is a concentrated aromatic extract, usually steam-distilled or expressed from a plant, that's normally diluted into a carrier before use rather than applied on its own.
Levant Direct's natural-oils range is made up of cosmetic-grade natural and infused oils — mostly carrier oils, alongside aromatic and infused oils positioned for fragrance and traditional use. We're upfront that this range is not sold or labelled as certified essential oils, and that distinction matters for how a buyer sources, labels and markets it.
What a carrier oil is
Carrier oils are pressed from the fatty part of a plant — a seed, nut or kernel — and are mild enough to apply directly to skin or hair without dilution. Sweet almond oil is a typical example: a light, widely used carrier that also serves as a base for blending other, more concentrated ingredients.
What an essential oil is — and why we don't call our range that
Essential oils are concentrated extracts, most often steam-distilled, and the aromatherapy trade around them typically involves purity testing (such as GC/MS analysis) and specific certification standards that go beyond ordinary cosmetic sourcing. Our natural-oils catalogue is cosmetic-grade — carrier oils and infused or aromatic oils sourced and labelled for topical and traditional use — and we don't market or sell it as certified essential oil, because it isn't held to that separate testing and certification standard.
Why the distinction matters for buyers
Mislabelling a carrier oil as an essential oil (or the reverse) creates a real risk: a customer expecting a concentrated essential oil that needs diluting could over-apply a product that was never meant to be used that way, and a retailer repeating an unverified "essential oil" claim on packaging or signage takes on a labelling-accuracy risk they don't need to carry. Calling our range what it actually is — cosmetic-grade natural and infused oils — keeps both the product description and the customer's expectations accurate. Aromatherapy practice also typically dilutes a true essential oil into a carrier at a small percentage before topical use, which is another reason the mix-up matters: a carrier oil applied at full strength is expected and normal, but an actual essential oil used the same way, undiluted, is a different and riskier practice entirely.
Stocking both categories responsibly
A natural-oils shelf built on carrier and infused oils is a genuinely useful, honestly labelled retail category on its own, without needing to borrow essential-oil language to sound more specialized.
