Is Sumac Poisonous?
No — the sumac sold and eaten as a spice, botanically Rhus coriaria, is a completely different plant from poison sumac, Toxicodendron vernix, which is a North American woodland shrub never sold as food. They share an old, overlapping common name and a loose family resemblance, but they're distinguishable by berry colour, leaf shape and where they grow, and the two are not confused in the spice trade.

Two different plants that share an old name
Culinary sumac, Rhus coriaria, is a Mediterranean and Levantine shrub whose dried, ground berries give the tart, lemony spice used on hummus, fattoush and shawarma. Poison sumac was once classified in the same Rhus genus — as Rhus vernix — before botanists reclassified it into Toxicodendron, the genus that also holds poison ivy and poison oak. That old classification is the root of the name confusion: the two plants haven't been considered close botanical relatives for some time, even though the outdated common name still circulates.
How to tell them apart
The clearest signal is berry colour. Culinary sumac produces dense, upright clusters of fuzzy, deep-red drupes — the exact part that's dried and ground into the spice. Poison sumac produces loose, drooping clusters of smooth, pale white or greyish berries, a visibly different fruit on a different-looking plant. Leaf margins differ too (culinary sumac's leaflets are serrated; poison sumac's are smooth-edged), and the two also grow in different conditions: poison sumac is a wetland, swampy-woodland plant native to eastern North America, while culinary sumac grows on dry, sunny Mediterranean and Levantine hillsides.
Is the ground spice on store shelves ever a risk?
No — the spice as sold commercially is dried, ground Rhus coriaria berries, harvested from an entirely different species, region and supply chain than poison sumac. There's no real cross-contamination hazard in the trade given how distinct the two plants and their growing regions are. Why poison sumac is actually dangerous
Poison sumac's hazard comes from urushiol, the same skin-irritating oleoresin found in poison ivy and poison oak, present throughout the plant's tissues. Culinary sumac doesn't contain urushiol and isn't related to that chemistry — this is purely a botanical identification point, and anyone with a suspected reaction to a wild plant should seek medical advice rather than rely on a spice-buying guide.
