Why is there white powder on Aleppo soap?

That white, powdery coating — usually called soda ash or salt bloom — is a normal, harmless byproduct of curing soap in open air, not a sign the bar has gone off. It forms when unreacted alkali at the soap's surface reacts with carbon dioxide in the air during the months-long cure, leaving a fine white film that can be wiped away, rinsed off during first use, or simply left alone. It's a cosmetic, surface-level effect, not a quality defect.

What actually causes the white bloom

During curing, a very thin layer of alkali sitting on the soap's outer surface reacts with carbon dioxide from the air, forming fine, powdery carbonate crystals — the same basic chemistry behind other airborne carbonate deposits, just on a soap surface rather than stone or metal. It's a surface reaction only; it doesn't reach into the bar itself.

It shows up more often, and more visibly, on soaps cured the traditional way over a long stretch of open air than on quickly machine-finished bars, simply because there's more time for the surface reaction to occur. Aleppo soap's own tradition — hand-cut and air-dried for six to nine months, per UNESCO's December 2024 inscription of the craft — gives soda ash exactly that kind of extended window to appear, which is part of why buyers ask about it so often with this soap specifically.

Do you need to do anything about it

Not really. A quick wipe with a damp cloth removes it if you'd rather the bar look uniform on a shelf, but it's equally fine to leave it — the first lather dissolves the powder within seconds and it doesn't return once removed. It has no effect on how the bar cleans, smells or lasts.

Telling soda-ash bloom from actual mould

The two are easy to tell apart once you know what to look for. Soda ash is a fine, dusty, whitish film spread evenly across the surface, with no smell and no texture beyond a light powder. Mould, by contrast, is fuzzy or slightly raised, often shows in discrete colored spots rather than an even coating, and usually carries a musty odour — and it's rare on a properly cured soap, generally only appearing where a bar has been kept in prolonged damp conditions after it left the curing room.

If a bar shows the fuzzy, spotty signs rather than a fine even film, treat it as a genuine quality concern worth raising with your supplier rather than a normal bloom effect.
